Royal Navy

The Royal Navy section at The Oratory School is an important part of the Combined Cadet Force , the absence of the sea nearby being no major handicap. Two Officers run the section: Lt. A J Wilson RNR and S Lt C Sykes RNR with support from the Royal Navy. Also supporting the Section is RN Section Coxswain H N K Lau. The most important component to running the Section is the senior cadets who choose to stay on voluntarily, without whom the Section would not operate as efficiently. The leadership skills developed by the cadets have led to careers in the Armed Forces as well as bursaries being awarded by the Ministry of Defence for further education at universities. The School often hosts Officers visiting the School to help deliver the syllabus or to support the School by providing Royal Navy helicopters for Field Days and Inspections and so on.

In the past year the Section has enjoyed field days afloat training on The Solent in yachts and fast motor launches as well as in Portsmouth Harbour in smaller boats. Additionally, in the Spring, the section visited the Royal Marines at Poole for a day on the water working with their ‘Rigid Raiders’. Every other week, Lt Wilson RNR takes cadets sailing and powerboating at a local lake; this helps the boys aquire Royal Yachting Association Qualifications, which is virtually free under the C.C.F. ‘umbrella’ as opposed to costing a large sum if undertaken through a civilian company.
