St Philip House Activities
Evening Activities
The house runs a full evening programme of activities. If a day boy opts to stay for one or more evening activities [and the vast majority do] they stay for supper with the boarders and arrange a late pick up. Alternatively some may board for that night.
This year’s programme includes the following: On Monday nights the boys are based in the sports centre where they can receive coaching in swimming as well as playing real tennis, squash and badminton.
On Tuesday there is an Outward Bound Club where camping trips and night hikes are arranged.
On Wednesday there is an indoor Soccer Club and a Debating Society. On Thursday there is a Chess Club and Drama Group and finally on Fridays there are Judo and Basketball clubs.
These are the clubs specifically arranged for the St. Philip house boys, but many of our pupils will attend whole school societies such as the Musical Society on Thursday evenings.
Extra Curricular Activities
As well as the evening programme described above the house also has a flourishing extra curricular programme. Each Sunday the boarders are taken on an outing with trips to the London museums and Bournemouth being recent examples. The boys of St. Philip frequently participate in school musical events and they put on an Easter concert. The house puts on a major drama production at the end of the summer term in the school theatre. The boys go adventure training to Devon and South Wales and enjoy an annual cultural trip to Paris. The house produces its own newspaper ‘The Bee’ and the boys elect from among themselves a house council to put forward their own ideas. The boys serve at our weekly Mass in our beautiful old chapel located next to the house which has recently been lovingly restored. We have supported a number of charities over the last few years, raising over £3000 for Water Aid and Readathon.
